Instagram Two-Factor Authentication | How To Turn On And What Is 2FA

Two Factor Authentication
Also recognised as 2FA is a type of Multi-Factor Authentication. It is a method of confirming users ‘identity by using a combination of two different factors’

  • Something they know
  • Something they are
  • Something they have
Example: When you try to login in your email, every new login would ask for the password, and a system generated One-Time-Password(OTP) sent on the register Phone number.

Instagram is making efforts to come with the Two Factor Authentication(2FA) as lots of users see hacked accounts. Sometimes due to users not taking account security seriously, sometimes bad thing can happen, so now Instagram has officially rolled out its Two-Factor Authentication(2FA).

Use Text Messages (SMS) For Two-Factor Authentication

Whenever you turn on Two-Factor Authentication, It will be asked to choose either text message (SMS) codes or a third-party authentication app as your primary security method. If you decide to use text message (SMS), you’ll be sent a text message (SMS) with a unique 6-digit security code each time someone tries logging into your Instagram account from a device we don’t recognise.

To turn on SMS login keys for your mobile phone:

  • Go to your profile and tap.
  • TapSettings.
  • Scroll down and tap Two-Factor Authentication.
  • Tap next to Text Message.
  • If your account doesn’t have a valid phone number, you’ll be asked to enter one. After entering the phone number, tap Next (iPhone) or (Android).

Use An Authentication App For Two-Factor Authentication

When you turn on two-factor authentication, you’re asked to choose only one. It will be a text message (SMS) codes or a Third-Party Authentication app as your primary security process. A third-party authentication app can be used to create login codes that help us approve it’s you when you log in from a new device for the first time.

To manage the third-party authentication app for login codes:

  • Go to your profile and tap.
  • TapSettings.
  • Scroll down and tap Two-Factor Authentication.
  • If still, you did not turn two-factor authentication on, tap Get Started.
  • Tap to Authentication App, then copy/follow the on-screen guidance.
  • Enter the verification code from the Third Party Authentication app to complete the method.

Activating two-factor Authentication (2FA) includes an extra “check” to an account so you can make sure you’re the only individual who can log in. Instagram previously just offered less secure SMS-based 2FA, which is vulnerable to SIM hijacking nothing.

Presently, the Application support authenticator applications that generate a code or send a user prompt to prove that is, in fact, the authorised account holder. When it’s available, enabling 2FA is one of the most natural, most strong security barriers anyone can protect any account.
