In a recent development, the scientist has found a strange Martian rock formation which was first spotted in the year 1960. NASA’s Mariner spacecraft which was flying near Mars has taken the snapshot of this structure, and from then, the experts are unable to know about that structure.

A group of researchers has done a study on this formation, and they have published that study in the Journal of Geophysical Research which shows that the formation has formed due to volcanic eruptions which were more than 3 billion years ago. This conclusion after studying the formation will be helping the scientists to understand the geology of Mars, and it can help in contributing the answers to all the questions on Mars.

According to Lujendra Ojha, who is the scientist at John Hopkins University in Baltimore said that this is going to be a massive deposit and it is not only on the Martian scale. It can also be regarding the solar system as we don’t know about any deposit which is like that.

The Medusae Fossae has formed over a one-fifth of the area as large as the United States. The sedimentary deposits which are formed on the land structure were also found to be about 100 times more massive than the largest volcanic deposit which was seen on Earth. This formation is said to be the largest known explosive deposit due to the volcanic eruption in the solar system, as said by the study authors.

The abstract of the study shows that a formation is a porous unit and it is uncertain. It processes include the volcanic eruption, ice-related mechanisms and eolian which may have help in its formation. The researchers who are studying this formation can use the data from various Mars orbiter spacecraft so that they can measure the Medusae Fossae Formation density and they concluded that it is porous. The eruption could have thrown out massive amounts of toxic gases into Mars atmosphere.
