A report published by state authorities on Monday shows that the number of cases of sexually transmitted diseases that are occurring in California reached a record high last year. It seems that the internet has played an important role in helping many couples for love bloom, but it also increased the sexually transmitted diseases for five years by 45 percent.
IN 2017, more than 300,000 cases related to chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea were reported as per data which is released by the California Department of Public Health. Gonorrhea and chlamydia are the common diseases which occur among the people whose age is under 30. Chlamydia is highest among the young women and men highly suffer from gonorrhea and syphilis cases.
The rise in infection rates is due to the various factors which include the decrease in condom use, fewer STD clinics, and lack of sex education. Dr James Watt, who is the chief of the division of communicable disease control for the Department of Health said, “It makes it easier for people to meet people they don’t already know to have sex. The internet allows for a broadening of sexual networks, and the broader that gets, the more opportunity you have for sexually transmitted diseases to spread.”
The jump in STD is very alarming as it is a very dangerous disease. Health officials claim that the increase in sexually transmitted disease is increasing every year for last six years. Watt said, “The levels we see now are higher than they’ve been since 1990. We’ve seen increases for all three diseases for the last five or six years. It’s concerning because that slope that uptick doesn’t seem to be coming down. In fact, it seems to be getting steeper.”
If the sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia and gonorrhea are left untreated, then it will lead to infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and ectopic pregnancy. The disease like syphilis can lead to blindness, neurologic problems, and hearing loss. As per CDPH report, the figures which are shown are very alarming for researchers and administrators. There are about 30 stillbirths which result from congenital syphilis statewide which is the highest in number as reported since 1995.
The rate of infertility went up dramatically high in the year 2016 and 2017 for each three common sexual diseases which occur among African Americans. These diseases are more likely to happen in African Americans than Whites.
