All birds have a built-in magnetic sensor which helps them to migrate different place safely. It seems that they are well-known with quantum physics and it comes to them congenitally. The new study in this has informed that birds have proteins in their eyes through which act like a microscopic compass to navigate them while traveling a long distance. As per the study, those proteins let them see the magnetic field of the Earth. In two new studies, two teams of scientists detected the light-sensitive protein which helps them to see and it comes from electrons named spin. Atoms carry a nucleus orbited around electrons. Every electron carries a spin. The spin helps the electron to produce a small bar magnet.

The team conducted two new studies, one examining zebra finches which were published on 28th March in the Journal Royal Society Interface, and the other with European robins (Erithacus Rubecula) which were published on 22nd January in the journal Current Biology. Both studies go around an interesting molecule called Cry4. It is a light-sensitive protein normally found in the Retina. If they succeed, then this would be the first time where the team can prove that a specific molecule helps animals to detect magnetic fields.

The Cry4 is a part of cryptochromes. These kinds of proteins are playing an important role in the functioning of circadian rhythms. The study which is published in the Annual Review of Biophysics stated that some molecules carry the uneven amount of electron and those are very sensitive and react immediately towards the external magnetic fields. These reactions can be improved by birds to feel the natural magnetic fields of Earth. One can develop two radical molecules simultaneously. Maybe one molecule provides an electron to another or maybe a molecule breaks into two parts and each part carries an odd number of the electron.

Both the hydrogen and nitrogen nuclei have spins. The electron hovered between the two stats in the external magnetic field. As per the study, this process is very sensitive towards Earth’s weak magnetic field. The magnetic field of the earth influences the outcome of the reaction. So, if bird confronting one way, the radicals will combine into a single product and if it facing up p another way the radicals will separate. So, it is expected that through this reaction the bird can see the magnetic field.

Now, the team will examine birds having no Cry4 to acquire more information in this. For now, the finding is compelling but not provided that much of data which can establish a new fact.
